Reiki

Reiki is a safe, gentle and non intrusive hands on technique which uses spiritual energy to treat physical ailments without using pressure. Holistically a treatment used for healing, balancing and harmonising all aspects of the person... body, mind, emotions and spirit. It was developed in 1922 by Japanese Buddhist Mikao Usui and is a Japanese technique for stress reduction and relaxation that also promotes healing.

Dr Usui was inspired to develop this healing system from ancient teachings after many years of study, research and meditation. He then spent the rest of his life practising and teaching Reiki.

The word Reiki is made of two Japanese words - Rei which means "God's Wisdom or the Higher Power" and Ki which is "life force energy"

While Reiki is spiritual in nature, it is not a religion and is therefore not dependent on religious belief at all and will work regardless of whether you believe in it or not. Reiki comes from God so many people find that using Reiki puts them more in touch with their own beliefs that they hold in their own personal life.

It is administered by "laying on hands" and is based on the idea that an unseen "life force energy" flows through us and is what causes us to be alive.

Reiki will go to where it is needed in the receiver, hands are simply placed on the body and the energy will flow, just trust. It is a simple, natural and safe method of spiritual healing and self-improvement that everyone can use.

Reiki treats the whole person including body, emotions, mind and spirit. It also works safely in conjunction with all other medical or therapeutic techniques there are very few contra-indications for Reiki.

In order for the Reiki healing energies to have lasting results, the client must accept responsibility for her or his healing and take an active part in it.

Reiki can have life changing effects on some people.

Reiki is not taught in the usual sense, but is transferred to the student during a Reiki class. This ability is passed on during an "attunement" given by a Reiki master. The student will then have been passed the ability to tap into an unlimited supply of "life force energy" to improve their own health and enhance the quality of life in others. Once a student has been initiated into Reiki they become a channel for the Reiki energy which will flow through their hands for life.

The recipient of Reiki usually lies on a couch, fully clothed, and relaxes, having a pillow under their head for comfort and a blanket for warmth. Reiki works differently on different people so whilst some may feel heat others may feel a chill or a tingling sensation during the treatment. It is however a relaxing and soothing experience.

Reiki healing can be given anywhere at any time as no special equipment is needed.

The following five Reiki principals are both guidelines for living a gracious life and virtues worthy of practice for their inherent value.

  • Just for today do not worry

  • Just for today do not anger

  • Honour your parents, teachers and elders

  • Earn your living honestly

  • Show gratitude to every living thing

To follow and practice these principles daily will undoubtedly enhance life.

A foot note to add, is whilst this article has been primarily about human beings and Reiki, it has to be added that animals are also very receptive to Reiki.

On a personal note I had an old cat called Cookie, who often would appreciate a Reiki treatment. This was initially greeted with a strange stare and a quick jump off my lap as if to say “what was that?” but with gentle encouragement and trust on her behalf we did practice this regularly, especially when I could see her hips were not behaving and she was having a little mobility trouble. I am sure that she eventually learnt the benefits of these sessions and would sit comfortably on my lap with the energy flow gently easing her problems. She was a very happy little cat on this earthly plane and I am sure Reiki had a helping hand in that!
